Rug Size Guide For Your Living Room

Rug guide.jpg

Rugs play an essential role in adding color, texture, and style to your living room.

BUT... No matter how beautiful your rug may be, if it’s the wrong size it just simply won’t work.

A rug that is too small for the room can make everything look off balanced. On the other hand, a rug too large might overpower the furniture and make the room look smaller and unbalanced as well.

My general rule of thumb is to make sure all of your furniture is on your rug, or at least the legs of the furniture are on it like in the visual I created above. I highly recommend at least an 8’ x 10’ or 9’ x 12’ for your living room!

My personal tips:

1. I personally have not seen a 5′ x 8′ rug work in a living room setting. Sadly, its just too small.

2. There needs to be at least 18″ of bare floor around the perimeter of the rug. You do not want to rug to cover every square inch of your space. Your space will not look right if the rug is too big.

3. Your feet need to touch the rug when you are sitting on even item of furniture in the living room.

4. Your side tables need to be on the rug as well or at least half way on it like the second example above.
